Why we do what we do
With Disabled Access it may be difficult to understand why it is that the Design and Construction of Access Features must be precise

Because unless you have a Disability or have friends or family with a Disability, or have experience working within the Disabled Community you may be unaware of the difficulties faced in entering and moving around a premises and using the facilities within.

Why one single step on the Accessible Path Of Travel can create a no go area for a Wheel Chair user.

Some Wheelchair users may be able to manage a 12mm (half an inch) step, but others may not. Many have Spinal problems,bumping and jarring movements of navigating a single half inch step can cause significant discomfort and pain

Why the common round door knob latch mechanism, which can involve twisting and grasping of the wrist to open the door is a problem for an Arthritis sufferer due to limited Dexterity, and why an alternative Lever Handle, which can be operated by nudging with hands or even elbows is the preferred option

Or why two Hand Rails are necessary on Stairways and Ramps instead of one, to aid the person with a Disability on one side of their body on their path of travel up and down

These are just a few. The law seeks to stop Discrimination against people with any form of Disability. Including
  • Physical 
  • Intellectual 
  • Sensory 
  • Psychiatric 
  • Neurological 
  • Learning 
  • Disfigurement or the Presence in the body of a disease causing organism 

Therefore Universal Access is required to premises which is not conditional on a persons ability in accordance with section 23 of the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA)

In which it is unlawful to Discriminate against a person with a Disability in regards to Access to Premises.

Consequently failure to comply with the DDA and BCA can result in new buildings being inaccessible and therefore result in additional expenditure for retro fitting if a complaint is lodged under the DDA or if final certification under the BCA is refused.

Daniel is a contracted technical advisor on Disability to Gold Coast City Council, and is senior consultant, and director to Obvius Access
Daniel is probably the only practicing consultant in Disability Access who is qualified and experienced to operate on Northern and Southern Hemisphere projects

Obvius Access has been trading since 2008.It is a family run company with over 40 years experience in the consultancy industry, we are based on the Gold Coast of Australia and Sydney NSW
