Assessment Of Paralympics 2012
Absolutely Amazing Achievement By Australian Athletes At Paralympics In London
By David Bedwell ACAA Director of Obvius
World Records have been broken and amazing personal and team achievements have been made by
participating Australian Athletes. It would probably be unfair to name individual performers as
all our and every other competing countries athletes are without doubt Heroes and Heroines.
For Australia, a country with a relatively small population by comparison, to have
surpassed America in medal rankings is surely going to inspire future generations of Athletes
It probably also goes to show that governments such as Australia who recognize that if they support people who play
sport and may have an impairment that they can transform lives and budgets of literally thousands of people.
The concluding statistics of the London Paralympics will certainly be a milestone in achievement
not only for the Participating Paralympians but importantly for in the world wide perception of Athletes with
The attendance figures published by the London 2012 organizers Locog show that 2.7million spectators paid
for tickets to attend the Paralympic Games over the 11 day period and that UK free to air
exclusive rights TV Channel 4 had at peak 6million UK viewers.
A survey by British Media reported today has shown that 81% of those interviewed stated
that the Athletic Achievements of the Paralympians had a positive impact upon their perception of
Disability and that there is a need for fairer representation.
It is vitally important now to capitalize upon the Recognition of People with Disabilities that the Paralympics has
created. The Right to Maintain or preferably improve disability funding allocations by Governments has I believe
been admirably earned for every person by the absolutely amazing achievements of all athletes, and should represent
a further major step forward in recognition.
